Larry Johnson
Back On Track
by Andy Allen
Larry Johnson is very excited about future directions for his music.
After a 20-year hiatus, Larry Johnson's return to performing and recording is really good news for fans of folk and blues music. Johnson is a member of the "bridge generation" - musicians who are old enough to have experienced the culture and people that shaped blues music, but still young enough to continue sharing this music for a long time to come.
He sees himself and his music in the rich African-American tradition that yielded blues and gospel music, and he has developed his own unique style within it. Johnson's music draws a great deal stylistically from the Piedmont blues style, with its intricate finger-picking guitar, as well as from traditional lyrics and stories. Despite those influences, Johnson has an instantly recognizable style of his own.
