Letters to the Editor

It all comes 'round again

In 1997 EarthBeat! Records released a CD that I produced and performed on with an incredible group of women called Circle of Women. This CD includes the song "Circle Round for Freedom." The song is credited as public domain because of my various conversations with a woman who said she was the co-author and that she felt that the song was a "circle song" and should not be copyrighted. In March, 1998 a woman named Linda Hirschhorn informed me that she had written and copyrighted the song in 1982 under the name "Circle Chant" and that some of the lyrics were different. As a result, I am writing to correct any confusion your readers may have regarding the authorship of this wonderful song. If you have Circle of Women in your music collection please correct the insert to read: "Circle Chant (Circle Round for Freedom)" written and ©1982/1992 by Linda Hirschhorn. Please correct the lyrics to read: "Circle round for freedom, circle round for peace/ For all of us imprisoned, circle for release/ Circle for the planet, circle for each soul/ For the children of our children keep the circle whole."

For information on Linda Hirschhorn or her progressive Jewish women's ensemble Vocolot, or to order one of her six recordings (The CD Roots and Wings includes "Circle Chant") contact: Oyster Productions/ P.O. Box 3929/ Berkeley, CA 94703.) I hope this helps to clear up any misconceptions regarding one of the most healing and beautiful circle songs I've heard. - Alice Di Micele (Ashland, OR)

Looking for a reissue

Back in the 70's a duet called Fraser and Debolt made several (?) albums on Columbia (a friend has one LP in good condition). Are any of these albums reissued on CD, perhaps in another country? I would be willing to pay the additional import costs to obtain any of their albums in CD format. — Donald Holland (via e-mail)

Paperboys in the bush

I wanted to drop a line and let you all know how impressed with your magazine I am. I have bought the last 5 or 6 issues and can't say enough about the excellent articles. You have a broad scope, but enough detail. Also, it helps to have had articles on Sam Bush and the Paperboys!! Those bands are the greatest.

If a reader's review of a CD matters: Sam Bush's newest release Howlin' at the Moon is one of the greatest CDs I have listened to. I am looking forward to your review. — Steve Howard (via e-mail)
